Heads or tails: the maths
Each flip lands heads 50% of the time and tails 50% – whatever came before. Five heads in a row is not unusual: the chance is 3.13%, and the sixth flip is still 50:50.
Betting on the side that is “due” after a streak is the gambler’s fallacy – the same mistake as backing black after five reds at roulette. The tally below the coin shows how the split only approaches 50% over many flips.
